Aaron Lopez

b. Portugal, 1731
d. Smithfield, RI, May 27, 1782

Born 1731 in Portugal. Came to Newport after the great earthquake at Lisbon in 1755. 

Aaron and his nephew Moses owned 27 square-rigged vessels including whale-ships and lost nearly all of them during the Revolutionary War. 
Left Newport along with other Jews during the Revolution. He lived first in Providence and then in Leicester, Massachusetts. 
He died returning to Newport when watering his horse on Scott’s Pond in Smithfield. His horse bolted into deeper water and he drowned May 27, 1782.
