Financier and sportsman.

Life long association with Newport; considered a summer resident.

Son of Caroline Slidell Perry, daughter of Commodore Matthew C. Perry,
and August Belmont, Sr., the wealthy banker.

As collegiate sprinter at Harvard University, he introduces spiked track
shoes into the United States. He graduates from Harvard in 1874.

In 1890, upon the death of his father, he assumes control of August Belmont
& Company and continues his father's influence on United States financial
and railroad affairs.

An avid sports enthusiast, he is responsible for Belmont Park (NY).

He is instrumental in the construction of the New York subway system, opened
on October 27, 1904, and the first complete construction of the Cape Cod
Canal, opened July 29, 1914.

He is buried in the family plot (Belmont Circle) at Island Cemetery with
second wife Eleanor.
