As one of the early benefactors of the Redwood Library, Mr. Potter clearly understood the need for what we now call an operating fund. Over a period of 16 years, he contributed the "handsome sum" of $10,000, handsome indeed in those days. In addition to general operating expenses, such as the repair of the roof in 1898, Mr. Potter recognized the Library's renovation and improvement needs. Thus in the fall of 1898, the "Potter Stack," now located in the lower level of the Perry Stacks, was completed "due to the munificent generosity of Mr. William H. Potter." The 588-shelf stack relieved the crowded collection and allowed for "a systematic and orderly arrangement of most of the subjects in the Library."
Across the aisle from the Potter Stack, you will see a plaque designating the "Norman Stack," named in appreciation for the generosity of Mr. George H. Norman. Mr. Norman bequeathed $5,000 in 1901. The bequest was used for the construction of a two-story stack which held approximately 25,000 books. Mr. Potter and Mr. Norman recognized the critical nature of their charitable contributions to the vitality of the Redwood. Members, visitors, researchers, and educators to this day enjoy the fruits of these century-old donations.
As you may know, the Redwood is in the midst of a Capital Campaign to enable the restoration of our lovely old building and the surrounding grounds. At the same time we must rely on the Annual Fund for a significant share - nearly 15% - of our Operating Budget. Please join Mr. William H. Potter and Mr. George H. Norman by writing your own chapter in support of the Redwood Library. The Redwood's membership remains consistently healthy; however, the needs of maintaining this historic building and the treasures housed within grow steadily each year. Please give generously to this year's Annual Fund; your chapter is waiting to be written. We thank you in advance for your support.
