Newport, RI is home to many superb examples of 18th-19th century domestic architecture. A number a Newport's famous "summer cottages" were acquired by the Newport Preservation Society and are open to the public. However, most of these historic buildings are still in use as private residences. Below are listed a selection of notable homes with their corresponding architects.

Pictured at right is the original "Breakers" building before it was rebuilt in the 1890s by Cornelius Vanderbilt.

  Newport Architects

(Please be aware that this list is not intended to be comprehensive and is drawn from secondary sources. It indicates that to the best of our knowledge these architects were associated with these houses. However, even the experts do not always agree. For example: The Watts Sherman House is attributed by Downing to Richardson and White, with changes by Dudley Newton. The "Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects" lists only Richardson for the initial design. This may be caused by the ebb and flow of architectural firms. Richardson's activity runs from 1866-1887. White runs from 1877-1906. McKim started In 1874; McKim, Mead and Bigelow existed from 1877-1889/90. McKim, Mead and White ran from 1879-1912 with a successor firm, 1910-1919).
